We now live in a world where everything is rated the “Aeven give a zero when you really want to. Then, Amazon calculates an average, which splits the stars into decimals, giving us, essentially, a 1 to 40 score, where 40 is a perfect 5 star.
Blasphemy.
Good Reads goes one step further, giving even the second decimal for books. But, I here ask you, what’s the difference between a 4.28 and a 4.49?
My point exactly.
Plus, you can only ever give round numbers, and we all are victim to the Uber sensibility rating. If nothing went wrong, give 5 stars.
Well, I will not conform.
My Rating System
I’ve been at university for 7 long years. In Italy. I passed dozens and dozens of exams, and each one of them was graded out of 30.
That’s the only system that makes sense to me. If it doesn’t to you, below there’s a brief explanation of what I mean when I assign a number in my rating system.
0 to 15 - This was a direct insult, and I will probably try to destroy it.
15 to 18 - It wasn’t ready to go public. Insufficient.
19 to 21 - It was ok. I wouldn’t recommend it though.
22 to 25 - Good job. I’ve enjoyed it and I’m actively suggesting the book to my friends.
26 to 28 - Great job. I’ve definitely learned from it, and didn’t want it to end.
29 - Absolutely amazing!!! It made me a better writer.
30 - Breath-taking!!! It made me a better person.
30 cum laude - My new favourite book.
